  • Hearing: Candidate may not be certified as eligible if audiometric testing shows an average hearing loss in their unaided better ear greater than 40 decibels (dB) at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz when the audiometric device is calibrated to ANSI Z24.5
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the required hours of college credit (60 hours with a grade of C or above) or have 3 years of active duty military.
  • Must meet TCOLE certification requirements.

Lateral/Military

Are you a current police officer looking for a change? There are many benefits to transferring to Mesquite PD. In addition to shortened in-service training programs, Mesquite PD also does not require basic peace officer academy with a current TCOLE license and two years of Texas police officer experience. Field training may also be lessened based on prior experience and your probationary period may also be reduced.

Public Safety Dispatcher

Applications will be accepted from candidates 6 months prior to receiving High School Diploma/GED and 18th birthday. An Applicant’s History Questionnaire must be completed and returned to the Human Resources Department by the deadline as determined by Human Resources. Position requires candidate to be willing to work 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift including weekends, holidays and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations. Four 10-hour shifts per week.

Will provide a variety of specialized and routine tasks in the provision of emergency and non-emergency communications services. Will answer emergency and non-emergency calls for the Police and Fire Departments. Will provide emergency dispatch services for the Police and Fire Departments.

Benefits

The City of Mesquite offers a choice of medical plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Employee health coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates.

The City’s Dental Program is available under one of two dental plans. Coverage is also available to all full-time employees at group rates.

Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. Voluntary Supplemental Life and Voluntary AD&D Insurance are also available to full-time employees.

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) is also offered. All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides a 2-to-1 matching contributions and interest.

Other benefits are social security, tax saver program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), voluntary long-term disability, deferred compensation plans, direct deposit, paid holidays, paid vacation, sick leave and personal leave.
