Are you a veteran who is eligible to utilize your post 9/11 GI Bill?

Eligible veterans can utilize their post 9/11 GI BILL and receive education payments while attending the police academy for a period of 6 months.

How to qualify for this benefit:

  • Eligible veterans will need to inform the Academy Coordinator within the first week of the academy start date they wish to utilize this benefit.
  •  Eligible veterans will need to submit a letter of eligibility, which depicts your education percentage based on your active duty time. This letter can be obtained from va.gov website under letters.
  • Eligible veterans will need to submit a copy of their joint service transcript (JST), which can be obtained from HERE. 
  • Would I be getting paid while attending the police academy, even if I receive education benefits from the VA?
    Yes, the police department will pay you your annual salary, and the education benefit is paid directly to you from the VA.
  • How much would I be getting paid monthly?
    The total paid to you monthly would be $2,612.00

$72.00 per month Associates degree – Criminal Justice

Bilingual Incentive Program

$150.00 per month – Certified to read, write, and speak a non-English language.

 $75.00 per month – Certified to speak a non-English language.

  • Not less than 21  years of age at the next scheduled Academy start date.  Lateral candidates not less than 21 years of age.
  • Vision at least 20/70 uncorrected in each eye and correctable to 20/20 with no color blindness
  • Successful completion of 30 hours of college credit
  • 2 years active military or police duty with honorable discharge reduces college requirement to 0 hours. 
  • 18 months of full time employment at the City of Mesquite reduces college requirment to 0 hours.

Are you an out of state police officer or federal officer looking to move to Texas? The Mesquite Police Department values your experience and would like for you to join our team! For those that are seeking to obtain a Texas Peace Officer certification will have to do so by applying through the Texas governing body, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). 

The Mesquite Police Department will reimburse you up to $1,000 for expenses accrued while obtaining your TCOLE certification if hired. We also provide up to a $2,500 relocation reimbursement if you relocate within the city limits of Mesquite. If you obtain your TCOLE certification, training will consist of a 7 week in-service course with an abbreviated field training.
